Teaching and Learning

Good Shepherd Christian School from its inception in 1983 has remained committed to providing students with a Christ-centred academic education. A recurrent focus within our curriculum and extensive co-curricular programme is the notion of providing excellence in education and excellence in spiritual instruction.

We teach from a Christ-centred perspective, seeking to incorporate the truths of Scripture and the truths of our Saviour in all that we do. It is the commitment of our school’s leaders to do the best to train up a child in the way he should go both scholastically and spiritually.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a play-based program for children aged 3.5 – 5 years old. The program is a 5 day fortnight and the daily times are 8:30am – 3:00pm.

We believe that every child is an individual created by God and our Kindergarten program reflects a child-focused, God-centred approach. At Little Shepherd Kindergarten, your child will be cared for in a personal way within the context of a Christian learning environment. Children are the focus of our Kindergarten ministry; we view your child as unique and a special gift from God.

Schooling is a necessary and lengthy stage in a child’s development. It should be enjoyable for the child as he/she is equipped with academic skills, allowed to explore his/her own creativity and begins to become aware of the talents God has given to him/her. Our Kindergarten environment is one way where each child is accepted, cherished and encouraged to accept each other in the same way.

Our Kindergarten environment is one way where each child is accepted, cherished and encouraged to accept each other in the same way.

Through these goals below, we aspire to achieve this with your child.

  1. To provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment, in which children can develop their full potential with the necessary skills to cope with life’s many challenges;
  2. To promote a child’s development at his/her own pace, encompassing all aspects of their social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual development;
  3. To provide family support through the provision of high-quality care, resources and education; and
  4. To encourage each child’s ongoing spiritual development by increasing their awareness of God and His plan for mankind.

Preparatory

The main goal of the Preparatory year at Good Shepherd Christian School is to prepare young children for success with their learning in the school setting.

During the Preparatory year students are taught all the Australian Curriculum learning areas with a priority given to literacy and numeracy development because these are the foundations on which further learning is built. Both literacy and numeracy capabilities are reinforced and strengthened through learning in all areas of the curriculum.

Middle School Years 7 – 10

In Years 7-10 the education program supports the deepening of knowledge, understanding and skills in all learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. The curriculum continues to prepare students for civic, social and economic participation and personal well-being and spiritual growth. The curriculum is designed to equip students for senior secondary schooling.

Work Experience Placement Program

Year 9-10 students have the opportunity to participate in a one week Work Experience placement program. Work Experience placement provides the student with the opportunity to test personal vocational preferences through performing tasks in a workplace. Students select placements according to their future occupational aspirations.

The student may experience the following outcomes: clarification of employment goals; and first-hand information about what it means to work, as well as about the work processes of the organisation and the work environment.

Senior School Years 11 & 12

At Good Shepherd Christian School the year 11-12 education program is designed to prepare and equip students for life after school. We aim to provide all students with an in-depth understanding of the world around them to ensure they graduate as well-educated, independent young adults, ready for life in the world and eternity. These two years are essential for each student to develop as a unique person of worth, to choose appropriate academic and career pathways, and graduate as a person of integrity to impact the world for Christ.

The focus in Senior School is on leadership. Students learn to apply the principles and skills of leadership to their own study and lives. Many opportunities are provided for them to develop and demonstrate their servant-leadership qualities in the school and local community.

The Senior School curriculum allows students to follow academic pathways leading to both the award of an ATAR, and vocational pathways which lead to School Based Apprenticeships and Trainee ships, work experience or employment. All subjects offered in Years 11 and 12 can contribute to the achievement of a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
